Fibroid Tumors

Fibroids are benign tumors that can grow inside or outside of a woman's uterus. Although some fibroids are small, others can increase in size over time. Fibroids don't always cause symptoms, but when they do, a woman may experience longer and heavier menstrual periods, urinary problems, and lower back or leg pain. When fibroids become large or symptomatic, your physician may recommend treatment, including a minimally invasive treatment option performed at BMC called uterine fibroid embolization (UFE).

Benefits of UFE Procedure at BMC

At Boston Medical Center, our skilled interventional radiologists have treated more than 3,000 patients with symptomatic uterine fibroids, which is more than any individual physician team or institution in New England. We can shrink the fibroid tumor and relieve your symptoms by using UFE. This procedure involves the insertion of tiny synthetic particles into the blood vessels leading to the tumor, which cuts off its blood supply and causes it to shrink. UFE can be very effective, preserves fertility, and requires less recovery time than more invasive treatments.

In 1997, BMC's interventional radiologist, Dr. Ducksoo Kim, became the first physician to offer UFE in New England. Since then, he and his colleagues have achieved excellent technical success (more than 99 percent) as well as clinical success (more than 95 percent) with a low complication rate (less than 1 percent) using this procedure.
